CBT Worksheet: Quieting External Voices & Building Inner Self-Worth

This worksheet uses principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness-based approaches to help individuals recognize internalized criticism, separate from harmful thought patterns, and reconnect with their own values and sense of identity.

Many people carry “background voices” shaped by family expectations, cultural pressure, past experiences, or fear of judgment. Over time, these internalized messages can affect confidence, decision-making, emotional regulation, and self-worth.

The worksheet guides users through:

Identifying recurring self-critical thoughts

Creating distance from those thoughts instead of automatically believing them

Grounding in the present moment through sensory awareness exercises

Exploring personal values independent of outside expectations

Building a more stable sense of self-worth

It also introduces gentle mindfulness and grounding techniques that help reduce emotional overwhelm and strengthen present-moment awareness.

Rather than fighting difficult thoughts, the goal is to notice them without allowing them to control behavior or identity.

“My worth is not determined by others’ expectations.”
